In the language of the Maya, Akumal means “place of the turtle”, and the turtles still feed in its calm bay, as they have for centuries. Our sanctuary rests in the jungle just inland from that bay, about an hour south of Cancún.
Some places hold you before anyone says a word. This is one of them.
The name came first. Long before the sanctuary, the Maya named this stretch of coast for the green turtles that graze its seagrass beds and nest on its sand, creatures that return, year after year, to the exact shore where they began. Guests tell us the parallel isn’t lost on them.
New Life sits a few minutes inland, folded into living jungle: birdsong at dawn, shade at noon, and the bay close enough that the turtles are part of ordinary life here, not an excursion, a neighborhood. It is a quiet place to do loud inner work, and we chose it on purpose.
