Your flight to Cancún is the only thing not covered. With your permission, we keep your referring organization updated during and after your stay.

Medical Safety

Your safety comes before everything.

Ibogaine is powerful medicine, and we treat it that way. Every guest is thoroughly screened before treatment. Your well-being is supported by an experienced medical team, with personalized care and attention throughout your journey. A full-time surgeon and two full-time nurses care for a maximum of eight guests at a time.

“We turn people away when treatment isn’t safe. Your life matters more than your booking.”

Screening begins on your very first call. If anything in your results says treatment would be unsafe, we will tell you plainly, and help you think about what to do instead.

The Experience

Healing is more than the treatment day.

The medicine opens a door. What happens in the days around it (how you’re held, how you rest, how you make sense of it all) is what helps the change last. At the center of it are two words: trust and surrender, trusting the process and the people holding you, and letting go so the medicine can do its work.

Held, Every Day

Days built around your recovery

Your stay weaves together rest and gentle practice: guided breathwork and yoga to settle the nervous system, massages and mineral baths to help the body let go, and the temazcal, a traditional sweat ceremony for release and renewal. Between sessions there is the pool, the garden, shared meals, and quiet.

Integration

You won’t make sense of it alone

Before your ceremony, you’ll sit down with our psychologist to prepare: your history, your hopes, your fears. Afterwards, two more sessions help you weave what you’ve seen into the life you’re going home to. And with your permission, we keep the people who referred you updated during and after your stay, so your support continues at home.

Where the Medicine Works

What brings people to Ibogaine

People don’t come to Akumal for a novelty. They come because something specific has them by the throat: a dependence that won’t loosen, a trauma that won’t quiet, a mind that won’t rest. Below is where the published research and our daily work meet. We’ll be honest about both: Ibogaine research is young, much of it is observational, and no honest clinic promises outcomes. What the evidence does show is a medicine unlike any other, and a real reason for hope.

Opioids · Alcohol · Stimulants

Addiction Interruption

This is Ibogaine’s home ground. Conventional detox manages withdrawal; Ibogaine appears to interrupt it. In study after study, people dependent on opioids reported withdrawal symptoms falling away within hours to days of a single treatment, and, alongside that quieting of the body, a loosening of craving that gave them something many had never had: a genuine window in which to choose differently.

That window is not the finish line. It is the beginning, which is why every New Life program wraps treatment in preparation, medical care, and psychologist-led integration. The medicine opens the door. We help you walk through it, and keep walking.

The evidence: In a 12-month observational study, withdrawal scores fell by more than half within three days, and half of participants reported no opioid use at one month (Brown & Alper, 2018). In the largest monitored case series, 191 people, Ibogaine diminished withdrawal and craving with no serious adverse events at the doses studied (Mash et al., 2018).

Trauma & PTSD

When the Past Won’t Let Go

Ask the people who arrive here what they’re carrying, and underneath the addiction there is very often a wound: combat, loss, violence, the things seen that can’t be unseen. Ibogaine’s dreamlike state is frequently described as a life review: memories surfacing not to torment, but to be seen clearly, sometimes for the first time, and set down.

The most rigorous study yet was conducted in veterans carrying both trauma and brain injury, and its symptom results were striking. We cite it carefully, as research, not as a promise about any individual. What we can say plainly: trauma is welcome here, it is expected here, and nobody will ask you to leave yours at the door.

The evidence: Stanford researchers reported average reductions of 88% in PTSD symptoms one month after magnesium-Ibogaine therapy in 30 special operations veterans, an observational study, without a placebo group (Cherian, Williams et al., 2024).

Talk to us about what you’re carrying →

Traumatic Brain Injury · Emerging Research

The Injured Brain

For veterans especially, addiction and trauma often arrive with a third companion: traumatic brain injury from blast exposure and impact. Headaches, fog, broken sleep, a temper on a hair trigger, and very few treatments that touch any of it. This is the newest and most hopeful frontier of Ibogaine research, and it began, fittingly, with the veterans themselves seeking help.

Honesty matters here: New Life is not a TBI clinic, and we do not claim to treat brain injury. What we know is that the Stanford team designed its study around veterans with TBI and measured improvements not just in mood but in disability and cognition, and that veterans and first responders, including those carrying head injuries, are prioritized at our door. Whether Ibogaine is safe for a particular brain is exactly what screening is for.

The evidence: In the Stanford study, average disability ratings moved from mild-to-moderate disability to no disability at one month, alongside gains in concentration and memory, early, observational findings the authors themselves say need controlled trials (Nature Medicine, 2024).

See how we serve veterans →

Neuroplasticity · A Fresh Start

The Window After

Why does one treatment echo for weeks? Part of the answer is noribogaine, the compound Ibogaine becomes in the body, which remains active long after the ceremony ends. Another part, from laboratory research, is growth: Ibogaine has been shown to raise levels of GDNF, a protein that nourishes and repairs dopamine neurons, the very circuitry addiction wears down, and to promote the growth-factor signaling associated with neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new patterns.

People reach for simple words to describe what follows: the noise stops. Cravings quiet, sleep returns, and there is room, sometimes for the first time in years, to build a different life. That window is precious and it is temporary, which is why integration isn’t an add-on here. It’s the point.

The evidence: In preclinical research, Ibogaine increased GDNF expression in the brain’s reward center, and blocking GDNF blocked its anti-addiction effects, animal research, early but mechanistically important (He et al., 2005).

Veterans & First Responders

You carried it for everyone else. Let us carry this part.

Many of the people who find their way to New Life have worn a uniform (military, fire, police, EMS) and carried things home that no one should have to carry alone. Veterans and first responders are prioritized here, and sponsored places are set aside for those who’ve served.

If cost is the wall standing between you and help, talk to us anyway. Sponsorships exist precisely for this.
